China Announces Patient Discharge Amidst Fears of Wider Problem

China has announced the release from care of one of last month’s 8 Bird Flu victims. The outbreak which saw the most human cases of bird flu in a single month for China, claimed the lives of 5 people, but has also sparked fears that China is hiding the larger problem. The number of human cases and the dispersion of them across a 1,000km area, has led experts to question whether all cases are being reported to the authorities, or even if Chinese authorities are hiding the problem. The fears are fuelled by China’s handling of the SARS outbreak in 2002-03 in which information was withheld, preventing the disease from being properly contained.
