More Human Bird Flu Infections in Viet Nam & Egypt

The Ministry of Health in Viet Nam has confirmed a new human case of the H5N1 strain of avian influenza. The case is a 23-year old woman from Dam Ha district, Quang Ninh province, and although the WHO confirmed the case only yesterday, she was hospitalized on 31 January 2009.

She is currently in a serious condition and is known to have had recent contact with sick and dead poultry. To date, there have been 108 cases of human bird flu infection in Viet Nam, of which 52 have been fatal.

In Egypt a 18 month old boy from Minia, 220km south of Cairo, has been confirmed to as the 55th case of Bird Flu in Egypt. Although 23 cases have previously been fatal, the boy is said to be in a stable condition.
