70,000 Animals at Risk from Foot and Mouth Outbreak in Uganda

06/01/2009 16:36:41

Livestock in Northern Uganda are on alert after the confirmation of a foot and mouth outbreak. Over 70,000 cattle are at risk (with pigs, sheep and goats also vulnerable to the disease), bringing into doubt Uganda’s plans to step up beef exports from the region. So far 300 cattle have been culled, but the government is monitoring the situation with more thought to be at risk, and all meat plants and auctions have been closed.
